Season 2, Episode 7:

3 Tips to Fill a Hybrid Role the Right Way

Research manager Michelle Chuck shares her tips on how to realign a role with the client’s needs and expectations.

3 Realistic Strategies to Fill a Hybrid Role

1. Be honest about the role

Although Michelle does recruitment research, her example rings true for recruiters. If you discover that a role you’re trying to fill is a hybrid one (AKA it doesn’t exist to the client’s initial expectation), be honest about it. You already know how much it’ll suck if you continue to deliver sub-par candidates, especially when there’s a solution right in front of you. Plus, that’s a pretty sweet discovery. And hey, it might even turn into another project.

2. Explain the process

Okay, so the client now knows the role isn’t what they thought. Now you have to explain how you came to that conclusion. Come prepared with answers to questions like:

  • What makes the role a 2-for-1 deal?
  • Who did you talk to?
  • What exactly was your research process?
  • Where is the talent located?
  • Should the client hire two people or rework the role?
  • What are the next steps to actually fill the role?

3. Be an advisor

Companies come to you for your expertise, so don’t be afraid to counsel them. Be confident in yourself and your skills. If a client’s ideal candidate is the picture-perfect purple squirrel, don’t immediately assume it’s a bump in the road. Take a step back to investigate. Seize those times as opportunities to be the educator. You’re more likely to gain respect and credibility if you flex your muscles a little bit, too.
