TECHNOLOGY RECRUITING & EXECUTIVE SEARCH

The “we’ll figure it out” hire is what kills your company at scale.

Software, SaaS, fintech, and enterprise tech. Hiring discipline for engineering leadership, GTM leadership, and the operator hires that turn product-market fit into a business.

02The pressure

Early-stage tech hiring runs on intuition and network. It works - until it doesn’t. The first time a key hire doesn’t work out and the team’s pace falls 40%, the cost of the wrong hire becomes very real, very fast.

Most engineering and GTM hires are screened for credentials and prior logos. Those are weak predictors at scale. We screen for what actually predicts: how this person operates when the roadmap changes, when the deal cycle stretches, when the team grows past their previous span.

Credentials tell you where they’ve been. Pressure tells you who they are.

THE KIND OF QUESTION THE INTERVIEW ASKS

Walk me through the system that broke at scale. What did you own, what did you rebuild, and what did the next growth cycle show?

03The guide

You have paid for the hire who interviewed brilliantly and sank at scale.

01

In executive search since 1999

02

85% retention on placed candidates at 24 months, firm-wide

03

Retained and project engagement models

04The plan

Scale exposes the “we’ll figure it out” hire. The engine replaces credential-matching with capability evidence - what this person can do with what they know - and installs tolerance discipline for the moment growth pressure says ship the offer anyway.

Your in-house recruiters can be certified on the same discipline through REI, the education arm of Guide, Don’t Drive™.

THE STAKES

Scale is the audit. The “we’ll figure it out” hire passes the interview and fails the growth curve - at your most expensive moment.

07Common questions
How do you test shipping history under constraint?

We don't ask about credentials or prior logos. We ask what broke at scale, what the candidate owned, what they rebuilt, and what the next growth cycle showed. A VP Engineering who can answer that with specifics has shipped under constraint. One who answers with a team accomplishment narrative has not - and won't when your company needs it.

Do you place for pre-IPO startups or only enterprise companies?

Both. The screen adjusts - pre-IPO environments require a different tolerance profile than an enterprise engineering org. We test for which operating conditions the candidate has actually thrived in, not just which logos are on the resume.

What VP-level technical roles do you place most often?

VP Engineering, VP Product, CTO (especially first technical executive roles), and Head of Platform are the highest-frequency searches. The common denominator is the architecture decision that scales badly - we screen for how the candidate has handled the moment where the technical debt memo is ignored until it becomes a production incident.

Stop hoping. Install the discipline that makes the next technology leadership hire produce.

Guide, Don't Drive™ installs Human Performance across four domains. LLI and CBI install it in your leaders. Qualigence and Qualigence Staffing install it in your selection - every hire. REI teaches it. GuideOS runs it every week. Steve Lowisz wrote it. One system. Different doors.
