EXECUTIVE SEARCH · CTO, CIO & AI OFFICER
The AI strategy is a hire before it's a roadmap.
Whatever the board just asked for - the platform, the modernization, the AI answer - it arrives through this seat or it doesn't arrive.
THE RECOGNITION
The last one spoke fluently about everything and shipped very little of it. Fluency is what interviews measure. Shipping is what you needed.
Research heritage since 1999 · 60%+ of the Fortune 500 have used Qualigence · 85% retention on placed candidates over 24 months
THE KIND OF QUESTION OUR INTERVIEW ASKS
“Tell me about the system you chose not to build - and who pushed back.”
WHAT WE TEST
Shipping history under real constraints
Build-versus-buy judgment with money on the line
How they translate for a non-technical board
The team that stayed after they left
THE SCIENCE
Why selection - the science under every service.
Most firms compete on access - who they know. We compete on evidence - what a candidate has actually done under pressure, tested against a definition of winning your team wrote down before the search opened. That is the 6-Step Performance Engine™: define winning, test identity and behavior against it, protect the standard through feedback and the decision.
It’s why 85% of our placed candidates are still performing at 24 months, and why 60%+ of the Fortune 500 have used Qualigence since 1999.
THE PLAN
Book a strategy call - bring the role, the market, or the problem.
We run it through the engine - research first, evidence over opinion, a standard that holds.
You get performance - not activity reports. A hire still delivering at 24 months.
QUESTIONS
How do you evaluate a technology officer's ability to ship versus speak?
We ask them to walk us through the system they chose not to build - and who pushed back on that decision. Choosing not to build something is harder than approving a roadmap. It requires judgment under constraint, stakeholder management, and a clear read of where complexity kills velocity. A leader who can answer that question with specifics is a shipper. One who pivots to vision statements is not.
How do you evaluate an AI Officer or Chief AI Officer candidate?
The AI Officer role is new enough that few candidates have a decade of direct precedent - and any candidate who tells you otherwise is selling. We evaluate what they have shipped with AI under real business constraints, how they have communicated risk and limitation to non-technical executives, and the standards they hold for build quality. We do not evaluate vocabulary.
What does the written evidence file include for a technology officer finalist?
For each finalist: the platform, delivery, and organizational outcomes the role requires at 90 days, 6 months, and 12 months; the specific behaviors we evaluated (shipping under constraint, board translation, talent development); the evidence gathered; the remaining risk; and our recommendation. Your board receives decision clarity, not a technology vision.
Hire the officer, not the vocabulary.
