Macy's department store announced this week its plan for most stores to open at 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day for the first time in the company's history.

In previous years, Macy's was opening at Midnight on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving.

The announcement, which according to the popular retailer aims to "make this day enjoyable for everyone," draws concern to many workers nationwide who wonder if the store's new policy aligns with the spirit of Thanksgiving and the importance of being with family during the holidays.

Macy's is not the only store to open its doors on Thanksgiving Day. Many Walmart, Sears and Toys R Us stores opened at 9 p.m on Thanksgiving Day last year.

Aligning with this new trend, Briarwood Mall in Ann Arbor is opening its doors at 8 p.m. Thanksgiving Day, according to The Ann Arbor News.

Is opening on Thanksgiving Day good or bad for businesses? Do you think this move will effect the morale for retail workers?
